A Comment on Comments

A few of you have emailed about my brief comment on comments, so some clarification is in order.

Nothing
bad
happened
and
everything
is
A
OK.

Please, keep commenting - they're extremely encouraging, and its by far the easiest way we have to communicate with all of you.

The purpose for the post: Some of our friends have 'unique' senses of humor.... situationally appropriate, of course, but the wider audience [read: Peace Corps staff] might not detect irony when they should. Quick cross-cultural note: Georgians do not understand or use sarcasm. This really makes my humor even more difficult than it is already, as they're tring to understand a 3rd or 4th language (for most) and have not had sarcasm in their lives before. Responses of, "Yes, that is true, but. . ." are not uncommon when they're faced with sarcastic comments. Its not just me - several volunteers have similar senses of humor, and they've had difficulties as well. On the upside, it does make communication more difficult. :-)

So, in sum, there is no problem, and stop freaking out. :)

Please keep posting comments - we do read them, and we really appreciate it. Carissa will be posting something longer later tonight hopefully - she's working on it now on her laptop.

Hooray for sarcasm!

I feel like that sometimes at church :-), but have managed to control it enough to not tick off *everyone* I know.

I wonder how ancient cultures appreciate sarcasm. Would Calvin's Geneva appreciate some witty comments about Papish proclivities? How about Native Americans discussing how Jon's bear teeth necklace really show some latent insecurity? Or maybe imaging a Roman carving some really witty text into an ancient aqueduct in the dead of night. Hmn...

LOL!!!! That was a nice chuckle! It's just, Brenden, that none of us want to be responsible for getting you kicked out of the country. We'd
NEVER hear the end of that! It would make holidays so tense for years to come. Harsh words might be used. But, the upside would be that we would get to see you sooner than expected. We do miss you,
lots,
Mom

No sense of sarcasm? That is absolutely amazing and fascinating. It'd be interesting/weird to look at that from a deeper standpoint, but, whatever.
